Writing Studio

Whether this virus ends in months, or it cycles in and out of a continually unfolding new lifestyle, expression can be a bridge between inner life and external connection. Creativity is essential accompaniment in these strange, unfamiliar times.

We will enter the virtual studio for two hours, once a week, Mondays in the late afternoon (4:00 - 6:00 EDT). Writing in a stepwise pattern, like picking flowers along the road, we’ll have a bouquet by the time we reach home. Brief Constellations will be stitched into our sessions to open and strengthen the places where something is blocked or too vague to capture. Growing up, we may have been told to be quiet, to not disturb, to not attract attention, to not show off, to not cause problems. These voices — of Mother, of Father, of teachers, or others — may be taking up residence in our head as though they are our own. In fact, they probably have been adopted without notice. To write is, for many of us, a rebellion.

This studio program is designed to help participants jumpstart or complete projects. We will work together from January 2021 to June 2021. Participants should plan to attend every class if possible as traveling together makes a difference to a burgeoning sense of a writing voice and the confidence to let it out into the world. The total commitment is 44 hours over the course of 6 months. Consider this: Writing 5 pages for each session will add up to 220 pages by the last class! All classes are live and interactive (versus taped).

Each session will consist of a brief guided writing exercise (including constellation), student reading and group discussion. Each session will be recorded. A private Facebook Group will be set up for participants to share new writing with the class. This group will allow the class to read, comment and support each other’s work. The group’s entries will be monitored on a weekly basis. The cost of the program is $3000.
